What Happened
The attack took place around noon in Baisaran, a picturesque meadow popular among trekkers and pony riders. According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants appeared suddenly from the surrounding woods and began shooting at a group of tourists who had just arrived.
Among the victims were Indian nationals and reportedly one tourist from Nepal. Most of the injured were flown to Srinagar for emergency treatment.
Who’s Behind the Attack
A group calling itself the “Kashmir Resistance” claimed responsibility via an unverified video shared online. Security officials believe this group may be a front for known Pakistan-based terror outfits, including Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen.
Government Response
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Saudi Arabia on a diplomatic visit, returned to India immediately after news of the attack broke. Home Minister Amit Shah visited the site and met with the victims' families. He pledged swift justice, stating, “Those behind this barbaric act will not go unpunished.”
Security forces launched counter-operations in Baramulla’s Uri area shortly after, killing two militants believed to be linked to the attack. Investigations have now been taken over by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Political and Public Reactions
The attack has drawn sharp criticism and condemnation from across the political spectrum. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called the incident “an unforgivable lapse in security,” while PDP’s Mehbooba Mufti urged restraint and a renewed focus on peace in the Valley.
Protests erupted in Jammu and parts of Kashmir, with many demanding heightened security and answers from the administration.
